Sarah Kambe Holland is a film director who wants to make you laugh and cry, maybe even at the same time. She's best known for her debut feature, Egghead & Twinkie, for which she was also the screenwriter, co-producer, and co-editor. The film screened at over 40 festivals worldwide, taking home the Jury Award for Best Comedy Feature at the 2023 Austin Film Festival. It has since been picked up for distribution by Tribeca Films.
Her commercial work has been recognized at the Cannes Lions, the Clios, the D&AD Awards, and more. Most recently, she teamed up with Bill Nye and the National Ataxia Foundation to direct a 90s themed edu-tainment series teaching people about Friedreich Ataxia.
Regardless of format, she loves finding humor in unfunny situations and telling simple character-driven stories with a big emotional impact. At this exact moment, she is probably staring at her computer attempting to write her second feature.
MY JOURNEY WITH MAKING STUFF
Every filmmaker has a different path. Here's mine so far...
From 2012 to 2017, I managed two YouTube channels (DyeYoung and Sholland) with 55K combined subscribers. While a good chunk of those videos are deleted now (there's only so much cringey 2015 humor I can take), I grew as a filmmaker from producing creative content on a weekly basis.
Fast forward to 2020. I'd shed my quirky YouTuber skin and reinvented myself as a "very serious" film director. Production had completely stalled on my debut feature film due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Unable to shoot as planned, I turned to TikTok to grow our audience.
My first TikTok video was a 1-minute elevator pitch for Egghead & Twinkie, and it went viral, amassing 2.8 million views. I followed up the initial pitch with a series of TikTok videos promoting our Seed&Spark crowdfunding campaign for the film. Ultimately, we raised over $22,000 and grew the @eggheadtwinkiefilm TikTok account to over 240K followers.
Having made silly videos on the internet since I was fifteen, I have a longstanding appreciation for short-form online content and its power to move people. These days, I direct a lot of silly video campaigns for clients. Funny how things work out!
